ROCK Solid, the latest exhibition at Malvern's On The Wild Side gallery, opens on Tuesday.

Sculptor Lawrence Murley was born and bred in Cornwall and although his work is well known in California, Rock Solid is only his second one-man show in the UK.

Working with Cornish serpentine and Picasso marble from Utah, he brings lizards, frogs and turtles into being from the solid rock.

Once Lawrence has an idea about which animal he wishes to carve, he looks out for a specific shape of stone. The closer he can get to the actual appearance of the animal, the less stone he needs to remove.

He uses the colour and texture of the marble and serpentine to give life to his vision of the animal within the stone.

Rock Solid is on until November 24. The gallery at 23 Church Street is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday-Saturday.
