THE Old Bottling Works in Belle Vue Terrace found itself turning Japanese at the weekend as a company helped usher in this year's Autumn in Malvern Festival.

Robson Ward Designs launched the festival, an official Japan 2001 event embracing the culture of the country, with a Japanese Weekend.

The company constructed a Japanese room and garden in the Old Works and guests were treated to Bonsai, traditional food and drink and exhibitions of Ancient Japanese Flower Arranging (Ikebana).

"We did a lot of research because it is not the easiest subject to pick up on," said spokesman Abigail Todhunter.

"We found the design of a very simple garden and copied that - it's fairly minimalistic but it took a lot of research.

"We had a fantastic response and people were very, very interested."

The company called on Malvern resident Mrs Tomoko McKay for help on making sure the layout was exactly right.

Their effort was welcomed by visitors and festival artistic director Peter Smith.
