BUDDING engineers at a Cleobury Mortimer school are getting into gear for a burn-up in home-made electric racing cars this weekend.

Students from Lacon Childe School are taking part in the final challenge of the national Greenpower competition at the famous Goodwood racecourse on Sunday. Shaun Dewey, Toby Dorrell, Jon Mole and Dan Harding prepare for Sunday's race.

The team, made up of Shaun Dewey, Toby Dorrell, Jon Mole and Dan Harding, are up against 60 rivals after finishing top of their qualifying round at RAF Cosford in July, beating off 16 schools to win the West Midlands and North West heat.

The challenge was to build an electric car and run it as many times around a track as possible in six hours using six drivers, changing batteries halfway through. There will also be an award for the fastest lap completed.

Engineers and technology teachers have guided the pupils, who have built the model by themselves and are hoping the two 12-volt car battery-powered vehicle can make 25mph.

School head of design and technology Richard Meredith said the team had been "extremely enthusiastic" since the contest began.
