FED-up taxi drivers have warned customers of fare increases because of roadworks in Kidderminster.

Cabbies are resigned to making detours around town because Castle Road has been blocked off for two weeks.

They say it will mean an increase in fares on the trips but there is nothing they can do.

Castle Road has been closed because of the installation of sewers for the much-delayed multi-million pound Weavers Wharf development - delays which have tested cabbies' patience.

Wyre Forest Taxi Association chairman Roy Powell said: "We understand there has to be roadworks because of the development but it seems to be going on forever.

"There has been delay upon delay and all the work leads to dirty cars and damaged suspensions.

"Unfortunately, for our customers going to places such as Habberley and Marlpool it will mean a fare increase, so we apologise in advance.

"For example I took someone from the rank to Franche High Street and the fare was about £3.10 instead of the usual £2.10."

However, Mr Powell stressed district taxi drivers had opted not to put up the general fare this year because of current problems.

He said: "We want to apologise to our customers in advance. It is not our fault and there is nothing we can do."
