PEOPLE in Shipston will be dismayed by the failure of some members of the local Area Community Committee to support the town's campaign for a crossing on Darlingscote Road.

At the last meeting, I proposed a motion asking the county council to install a crossing as a matter of urgency. My colleagues, councillors Richard Adams, Chris Pilkington and Chris Saint - who, as our county councillor, has been pressing county officials to drop their opposition - all supported me.

But other members abstained, claiming they did not have enough information - even though they were told by the county councillor and district councillor that we the town council and 800 petitioners all know a crossing is needed.

Their refusal to support us was disappointing. But local people may have something stronger to say about the behaviour one councillor who walked out of the meeting in protest at my proposing the motion.

TREVOR RUSSEL, District Councillor, Hawthorn Way, Shipston.
