A FANFARE written by David B Morgan, one of the most talented youngsters in the area, opened the 20th annual Music For You.

Prior to the main programme, pupils from Stourport High School entertained with Latin percussion music.

Stourport Brass Band, under musical director David Maplestone, continued with another of David's compositions, Onward and Upward, which celebrated their promotion to the second "division" of the Brass Band League.

David played tuba with the band, but returned to his more familiar percussion section with Wyre Forest Symphony Orchestra later in the programme.

Music from Jurassic Park saw two young percussionists frantically scampering around, helping to conjure up pictures of dinosaurs. After the volume of sound they created, it is a wonder the town hall still has a roof!

Rob Clarke was outstanding on the trombone, with Blue John, and to finish we were treated to music from Zulu, mood music if ever there was.

Stourport Choral and Operatic Society began well, with Gershwin songs, but I am not happy with Pie Jesu set to Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This is a beautiful piece of music for piano and orchestra, not an accompaniment to lyrics.

The end of their section was great fun, with more verses than I had ever heard before in When The Saints Go Marching In.

The West Midland Light Orchestra dedicated their programme to the people of USA, with a programme of music by American composers.

Claire Worboys sang Tonight and Somewhere from West Side Story, John Hutton sang I Get A Kick Out Of You. The violins were superb in Laura and there was only one way they could have ended this tribute to America - New York, New York.

Wyre Forest Symphony Orchestra gave an outstanding performance of Malcolm Arnold's Four Cornish Dances, under their new conductor Damian Penfold. Then it was Proms time, and I have never heard a more enthusiastic audience, as again we raised the rafters in Rule Britannia, Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.

In these troubled times we needed a lift and we really got one on Friday.
