PLANS for road calming measures could put the brakes on problems at an accident hotspot in Worcester.

The Highways Partnership has drafted a number of proposals for public consultation after a series of accidents at the junction of Bilford Road with Astwood Road.

Suggestions so far include installing traffic lights at the junction, the possible introduction of speed bumps and ideas for a small island and pedestrian crossing.

Councillor Mary Drinkwater, who has been leading the campaign for change, welcomed most of the proposals as a useful contribution to solving the traffic problems about which local residents had long complained.

But she did not support the proposal which would make the eastern end of Coombs Road one way.

"I'm told that this is necessary in order to install traffic lights at the Droitwich Road/Bilford Road junction," she said..

"The trouble is, if traffic is diverted elsewhere, it will create other problems. I would prefer to retain the present island at this junction so that Coombs Road can remain two-way."

Parents and governors were due to discuss the plans after Perdiswell Primary School's annual meeting today at 7.30pm.

Maps were also due to be displayed at Elgar Technology College on Wednesday, October 17, from 4pm to 6pm and the following day from 6pm to 8pm.
