Bretforton Ladies 3, Hereford1

It was a tense beginning for Bretforton's second league outing on the Evesham High School Astroturf.

The sides seemed well matched with attacks at both ends giving the respectable crowd some enjoyable action.

Hereford started well showing good skills on the ball and taking control but it was Deb Slatter who was first to get on the scoresheet with an excellently struck strike from the top of the circle.

The home team didn't retain their lead for long as a determined Hereford team soon earned a short corner and scored from the rebound.

Bretforton stepped up the pace and kept up the pressure until the end of the first half when they made a few substitutions.

The changes worked well and led to some better work on the right-hand side of the pitch between Gilly Wright and Julie Hall.

Hereford gained a spate of short corners but the home side was determined not to get caught out and the persistent Bobbie Handley was impeccable at blocking almost every one.

Halfway through the half, a clean strike from left winger Sarah Hall forced a save from the keeper and the ball fell kindly for Lisa Workman to give the home side the lead again.

Bretforton, now feeling confident and with Hereford tiring, made it 3-1 when captain Sophie Corbett rocketed the ball into the back of net from a pass back to the top of the circle from Workman.

Bretforton's fitness work at training proved the difference between the teams thus enabling full effort to the last whistle.

EXPERIENCE outshone youth on Saturday as the villagers totally dominated the game at Evesham.

Sarah Bragg was the star attacker with five goals, but it was Amy Trotman who earned the player of the match vote after setting up several goals.

Bretforton led 4-0 at the interval with Bragg (2), Blanche Surman and Tracey Hodgkins on target and the former soon set the second half scoring under way on her way to a nap hand.

Joining in the scoring fun after the break were Hodgkins, Kate Mitchell and Emma Walker.

The second string entertains Newent on Saturday with the first team at home to Devizes. On Sunday, the juniors play host to Cheltenham.
