ONE of the jazz world's greatest drummers Elvin Jones is limbering up for a stint at Ronnie Scott's in Birmingham, starting tonight.

Elvin was a key member of the legendary saxophonist John Coltrane's quartet in the 60s and inspired a whole new style of drumming, influencing more or less every style of music.

The veteran sticksman is now in his seventies but is still going strong and will be leading his Jazz Machine to Brum before moving to London.

The group sees Pat Labarbara on saxophone, Delfeayo Marsalis, younger brother of Wynton and Branford, on trombone, Eric Lewis on piano and David Pulphus on bass.

While in the Second City, Elvin will also be offering his expert advice to privileged students on the BMus (Jazz) course at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

Birmingham International Music and Birmingham Jazz have both been instrumental in bringing the great man so close to home.

The Elvin Jones Jazz Machine play Ronnie Scott's until Saturday, starting at 8.15pm.

Singer Roy Forbes fills the support slot tonight and tomorrow.

Tickets are £17.50 (£11.50 members) from Ronnie's on 0121 643 4525.
