A NEW operator is set to save the vital Redditch bus routes First Midland Red will be axing, writes Becky Procter.

Pete's Travel, of West Bromwich, will step in to run new 178, 180 and 61a services from October 25.

The firm has found a base at Weights Farm, Bordesley, and is looking for drivers from Redditch.

Pete's Travel director Kevin Jones said the firm would be ready to take over the new routes as soon as First Midland Red pulled out.

But the firm will not accept Reddicards and is now in talks with Redditch Council over pensioner passes.

The new 178 service will operate about every hour between Redditch and Birmingham via the Alexandra Hospital, the new town and Drakes Cross.

The new 180 route will be via Truemans Heath.

The 61a service will be a combination of the current 61/62 routes.

It will operate about every 40 minutes between Redditch and Matchborough East from Monday to Saturday.
