AT the September meeting, the speaker was Roger Turner from Cheltenham.

Mr Turner is an architect and garden designer and took as his title Graceful Grasses and First-rate Ferns.

He spoke with authority on this most fashionable subject, describing the wealth of grass varieties in all their form and colour with the aid of slides.

He was in favour of using grasses at the front of a mixed border to soften the effect.

Large species such as the ever popular pampas grass, he thought, were seen at their best in open ground rather than plonked in the middle of a small lawn.

He told his audience how to protect their expensive investment in tree ferns over the winter by wrapping the tops with sacking.

On the whole he prefers to use evergreen ferns, at their best planted in moist waterside areas.

The next meeting will be on Thursday, October 18, at 7.15pm at the Swan Hotel when the speaker will be Bob Hares from Pershore.

He will talk on Autumn Colour and the Shaded Garden. Guests welcome (£1.50 for non-members). Call 01789 765105 for details.
