A CARING feline charity is offering a free neutering service for hard-up Droitwich Spa pet owners.

The scheme aims to help animal lovers on low incomes and reduce the number of unwanted and abandoned cats in the town.

The Worcester and District Cats Protection branch has launched the winter campaign following a bequest from a loyal supporter.

Residents can apply for a neutering voucher which can be used at several town veterinary practices.

Charity branch chairman Lynn Glaze, from Droitwich, said: "The campaign has been timed for maximum effect. Many people have acquired kittens over the summer.

"These animals will now be mature enough to have offspring and we hope to reach female cats before the toms do."

The organisation's veterinary officer, Rhona Simms, said people should know the following facts:

* An un-neutered female cat can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in five years;

* A female can have three litters a year;

* Male cats can impregnate 32 females a year;

* Most cats killed on the road are un-neutered toms;

* It's a misconception that a cat should have one litter before it's neutered;

* Neutered cats are healthier, happier and more affectionate - particularly males.

The charity said many owners think the operation is unkind but it is essential for controlling the cat population.

Vouchers are limited and will be handed out on a first come, first served basis.
