A CAMPAIGNING councillor has welcomed steps taken by developers to make a busy Droitwich Spa road safer.

Wychavon district councillor Andrew Christian-Brookes (Con, Lovett) called for improvements to a traffic island and footpath, off Kidderminster Road, this year.

He received nearly 100 complaints from residents about the roundabout at Stonebridge Cross Business Park, in Hampton Lovett.

There were several accidents at the site and motorists said visibility was poor and signs were misleading.

The height of the island, owned by Birmingham-based Stoford Developments, has now been reduced.

Cllr Christian-Brookes had also called for a culvert, which runs under the A442, to be fenced off and he wanted fencing alongside an adjacent path.

He feared for the safety of pedestrians and pointed out that children had been spotted playing in the brook.

Cllr Christian-Brookes told the Advertiser: "Rarely do organisations consult with residents before taking action.

"I welcome the majority of what has been done but no-one has been consulted and the work remains unfinished."

The councillor pointed out that while the path is now fenced, the culvert is still open to the public.

Stoford Developments construction director Andy Rowbottom said: "Our original plans were checked by the Highway Partnership Unit and approved.

"However, when the unit carried a safety audit it called for several amendments which we were only too happy to carry out."
