RUMOURS about the closure of a village post office near Droitwich have been put to rest.

Speculation about the future of Wychbold Post Office and Stores was sparked when the sub post-mistress sought permission to turn the shop into a house.

Wychavon District Council confirmed it had received a planning application and said it would be considered in November.

The news was discussed at the Dodderhill Parish Council meeting on Monday night and Spa MP Peter Luff voiced his concerns.

But a Post Office spokesman has now put the record straight.

He said: "The sub post-mistress has submitted a planning application but it's only so she can live at the property after retirement.

"The woman is looking to the much distant future - years and years ahead. Village postal services will continue as normal, nothing is going to change."

He admitted speculation had been fuelled by the closure of the retail side of the Worcester Road business.

He said: "This is because of fierce competition from other businesses in Wychbold."

Staff at Wychbold Post Office and Stores refused to comment.
