RECENT comments by Prince Charles at the British Cheese Festival caused me to remember a man who was a chargehand fitter at Archdales.

In his old cloth cap and fawn raincoat he was a familiar figure in the Rainbow Hill area.

Unfortunately, he had a reputation for smelly feet, and this could be quite objectionable, particularly in hot weather. It was even said that once, when he boarded a bus, all the other passengers preferred to get off and catch the next bus.

It was not until years later, when reminiscing about this man, that I realised there was another explanation. I was told how one day he took a lunch-break snooze at his workbench, for once removing his cloth cap.

I was told that an apprentice played a prank on him and stuffed Gorgonzola cheese, left over from his lunch, all round the inside rim of his cap. This could have remained undetected for years.
