RESIDENTS at a Mencap residential home in Worcester are cooking up a stir with a new computer.

The machine, donated by Hewlett Packard, has been set up to boost residents' mouse-handling, game playing, internet and schedule planning skills.

Some of the six residents at Bromwich Road House in St John's - all of whom have severe learning difficulties - have enrolled on a basic food hygiene course at the day care centre they attend.

They use the computer in the evenings to create a virtual kitchen and practice their culinary skills learned during the day.

"I'm thrilled with the progress our residents have made," said Karen Wright, Mencap's principal manager in the south west.

"In today's world, we often take technology for granted, forgetting what it can do to enrich people's lives.

"The residents are finding out for themselves that technology can be fun as well as educational."

The computer is one of 30 installed by Hewlett Packard in Mencap homes across the region.
