GREENPEACE campaigners will be holding a peaceful protest outside a city supermarket this weekend.

The Worcester branch of the action group will be stopping shoppers on Saturday in a bid to raise awareness of genetically modified feed being used in pig feed.

Peter Robinson, co-ordinator of Worcester Greenpeace, said the organisation would be setting up a stall outside the premises of a supermarket - which is being kept secret.

"We will be raising awareness that GM organisms are being used in Danepak's pig feed which we then eat as bacon," said Mr Robinson.

"I think this will come as quite a shock to many people who believe GM modified strains have now been removed from the food chain.

"This is true of many supermarket brands but unfortunately it's still going into animal feed.

"We will be asking members of the public to send a handful of GM pig feed, which we will be handing out, back to Danepak along with a postcard expressing their concern.

"We will also be conducting a survey on people's attitudes to a variety of GM issues, including GM products like bread and tomatoes, GM crops in the area and their concerns about risks to the environment and their own health."

Mr Robinson said the day of action was all part of a national campaign.

"So far, we have been very successful in making the public aware of the dangers of GM food.

"However, there is fear among people who know there have been no tests done on this product so we don't know the long-term effects on humans."
