WORCESTER'S newest football club has cornered the girl's soccer market after a phenomenal success at its open day.

Warndon Villages Football Club, set up by mum Lynn Gardener after she failed to find a summer soccer school for her son, held a launch on Saturday at Lyppard Grange Primary School.

Around 60 youngsters kicked off the club's signings, including nine girls who refused to be sidelined.

"They were so shy because it's so dominated by boys," said Ms Gardener. "They play mini soccer at that age so we've got enough for a team."

Worcester City player Mark Owen scored a hit when he helped out with coaching and there was also a five-a-side tournament at the open day.

"I'm really pleased with how it went," said Ms Gardener, whose six-year-old son Billy was one of the first to register.

Involved

"I haven't absorbed it all yet. The coaches were grinning from ear to ear.

"It's been a dream for them to get involved in the club."

The club will now start training each week ahead of joining a league next season.

A number of friendly fixtures are due to be arranged while the team gels.

"We've been really lucky and had an awful lot of support," said Ms Gardener, of Hingley Avenue, Warndon Villages.

"I want to give my thanks to the Evening News, Steve Cain of Tewkesbury Sports who's been fantastic, Prontaprint and to all the children and parents.

"We had a fun time at the open day and hope it continues."

The club received a cheque for £4,000 from WS Atkins to help buy kits.

"We want to be actively involved in supporting the club," said Tracey Croft of the Ronkswood-based firm.

"We wish them success for the future."
