STAN'S the man at the Starlets Veterans latest contest, which was held on Tuesday. At Woodlands Views Arles Pool, Stan James (Bewdley) headed a close result with a pole, maggot and caster fished up in the water at peg 24 for 36-14-0.
Ken Giles (Alvechurch) followed with 31-10-0. The Starlets Veterans Thursday event, which was fished at Willow Marsh's Dragonfly Pool, failed to live up to expectations with Phil Hill (Redditch) needing just 12-12-0 for victory, which included an eight pounds carp taken with pole and meat from peg 28. Second, Mike Millinchip (Kidderminster) 9-0-0 and third Harold Willey (Kidderminster) 8-10-0.
Moorlands Farms Thursday Special Open was held on the Band and Island Pools with Alan Sutton (Birmingham) taking the only ton-up catch of 103-3-0 from the margins of bank peg 17 with pole, corn and meat. Second Rob Brennan (Map Starlets) 81-14-0, third Mark Tooze (Leehall) 75-11-0.
On Friday the Woodlands View Afternoon Open was held on Deans Pool where Chris Whitehouse (Spartans) had an easy victory by pole fishing corn and meat at peg 63 for 140-3-0. Second Clive Munslow (Preston Inovations) 80-5-0, third Chris Ball (Spartans) 79-14-0. Saturday's Woodlands View Open was also held on Deans Pool with Sean McCarthy (Sirlowy AC) topping the list with 126-6-0 of carp taken with pole, corn and meat from peg 61, Second Grant Albutt (Daiwa Dorking) 105-5-0, third Wayne Mellings (Fosters Tipton) 79-3-0.
The Ovation Leisure Open fished at Lower Broadheaths Sycamore Pool rounded the series off with local angler Anthony Orgee (Broadheath) taking the honours by pole fishing maggots in the margins of peg 20 for 126-7-0. Keith Woodhead (Ovation Leisure) was way back in second place with 48-4-0, and yours truly Tony Brown (Ovation Leisure) was third with 44-3-0.
Disappointment
Long Nuke Angling Club were at Kinwarton on the River Alne on Sunday for their annual contest, but the low clear river was a disappointment. Just 2-3-0 of chub was all that was needed for 80-year-old Quinton angler George Hopkins to take the trophy, taken with pole fished white maggots from peg 8. Ron Allen was second with 1-4-0, third Terry Goldinghay 13oz 8dr.
The 100 AC fished its Committee Cup at Hinksford on the Staffs-Worcs Canal with Birmingham's John Burns taking a creditable 4-1-4 of roach in the heavy winds with pole and casters halfway between bridges 38 and 39.
Joint second were Brian Nowell and Stuart Cutler both with 3-15-0. Astwood Fisheries Bluebell Pool Open was won by Doug Bennett (Hewell Road MG), from peg 20 where he pole fished worms in the margins for 59-2-0. Second Brian Williams (Astwood) 29-2-0, third Barry Jones (Weoley Castle) 14-0-0.
Wyre Forest Fishery Furnace Mills Open was held on Furnace Pool where Stourbridge angler Andy Newton (Lifestyle VDE) picked bonus peg 4 and collected £230 for his winning catch of 43-4-0, taken with pole fished chopped worms. Second Mark Aphlett (WTS) 25-12-0.
Moorlands Farms Meadow Pool Open was a close encounter with Bob Jones (Moorlands) taking the verdict with 79-9-0 by beating the strong winds with ledgered meat at peg 52. Second Mark Jones (Warley) 70-0-0, third Brian Hill (Warley) 68-15-0.
The three hour evening open was won by Steve Pearce (DC Lifestyle) from Meadow Pool peg 6 with a pole and corn catch of 115-4-0. Mick Henshall (Fosters MG) was second with 87-10-0, third Steve Pickup (Fisherman's Friend) 68-2-0.
Woodlands Views Deans Pool Open was won by Andy Minshall (Fosters Tipton) with carp up to 10 pounds in his 87-0-0 catch taken with pole, corn and meat from peg 52. Second Tim Guise (Fosters Tipton) 78-12-0, third Kevin Slade (AOK) 73-8-0.
