THE idea of an elected "Mayor of Worcestershire" has failed to capture the imagination of the electorate, according to the county council.

The authority adopted a cabinet-style system on a pilot basis last summer. By next April it must change permanently.

More than 5,000 people responded after the council sent out 180,000 pre-paid envelopes to ask voters for their views.

Sixty-two per cent backed having a cabinet and leader, while 22 per cent opted for having an elected Mayor of Worcestershire and a cabinet.

Another 16 per cent wanted an elected Mayor, working alongside a council manager.

At the moment the cabinet has 13 members, six of whom are Conservatives.

The others are from the Labour, Liberal Democrat, Independent Kidderminster Hospital Health Concern and Independent groups.

By Friday, September 14 the council has to propose cutting the 13 seats to 10.

Under the modernisation plans, a single party can occupy all the cabinet seats.
