JOBS are to be created in Worcestershire by agricultural supply company Countrywide - a year after it axed 60 workers.

The firm wants to expand its site at Defford, near Pershore, after shutting its feed mill in April, 2000.

The company, formed in 1999 when Midland Shires Farmers and West Midland Farmers merged, will convert disused buildings at the Defford site to create a distribution centre.

Warehouse staff and drivers will be recruited to cope with the increase in business.

"By converting disused buildings adjacent to the existing seed plant and energy operation, we will create a distribution centre with 40,000 square-feet of storage space," said supply chain manager Mark Williams.

"Countrywide will be actively recruiting warehouse staff and drivers to cope with the increased business supplying our network of 34 Countrywide stores in 12 counties."

The construction contract has been awarded to Pearce Construction, Evesham, and is due for completion in October.

"This investment supports the commitment of Countrywide to providing a full range of products for farmers and country customers, backed with first-class service," said managing director Ian Smith.
