A WORCESTER theatre company for people with disabilities has been awarded a Lottery grant to stage a performance of dance, acting and film.

The Other Voices Theatre Company applied for one of the Lottery Grants for All in December so that it could stage a performance of its own creation.

It received the £3,421 grant in April and will be performing Dreamcatcher later this month.

"With the money we have been able to employ a professional design team for the show and we have just installed a brand new dance floor for future work," said Debbie Holland, one of the company's artistic advisors.

The company has also received expert advice and tuition from Motionhouse Dance Company, a national group, which has a two-week residency at the Swan Theatre.

Motionhouse will be giving workshops on different styles of dance and performance and generally help Other Voices rehearse.

Regional companies Dancefest and Drumlove have also provided help and advice to Other Voices in preparation for the premiere of Dreamcatcher on Tuesday, July 10.

The performance has a cast of 14 people with learning disabilities, who are assisted by arts advisors and someone who signs for the deaf.

"Dreamcatcher is an inspired and action packed journey into deep inside our minds," said Debbie.

It begins with a trip to the dentist, and when the patient goes under anaesthetic it follows the struggle between "Fear" and "The Dreamcatcher" in nightmares and dreams.

The dance and acting will be accompanied by original film from local filmmaker Matt Dukes.

"The performance is about the feelings that we all share regardless of things like ability and colour," added Debbie. "It is a story of hope."

Dreamcatcher will be performed on July 10 and 11 at University College Worcester drama studio.
