Continuing her theme The Year of the Child, president Janet Ince invited fellow Soroptimist Val Clark to be guest speaker in June, talking about the "Baby Think it Over Project" and its potential use with pupils in secondary schools.
After piloting the idea with her own club, at Stourbridge, in conjunction with Perryfields High School, Quinton, she decided to extend the idea to regional members to see if they would like to assist schools in their own area.
Val told how teenage pregnancies are on the increase, so the life-sized, computerised model "baby" can be used as part of the curriculum. It is taken home for 48 hours by a pupil, and simulates a 12-14-week old child who cries for food, winding and nappy changing. The baby "cries" until it is dealt with correctly.
A "question and answer" session concluded the evening.
