OFSTED: Harvington pre-school had its OFSTED inspection recently and all concerned were delighted that the inspector's comments were very favourable, resulting in a three/four years' recommendation which means that it will not be considered necessary to inspect the group again until that time has elapsed. The children were said to have made good progress towards achieving their early-learning goals and the thanks for this must go to the staff and committee for their hard work and commitment. A few places are vacant, so any reader interested in having more information should contact Sue Johnson on 871128 or, alternatively, visit the open evening next Tuesday from 6pm to 8pm, that evening the hall will be set out as for a pre-school session, together with examples of the children's work. Summer break begins on July 20; the new term starts on September 4.

J & S STORES: Changes hands later this month when Shirley and John Hardman retire from their shop in Leys Road. They have seen many changes and, given the nature of their job, could tell many a tale, but, like all shopkeepers, they will continue to maintain a discreet silence as they continue their lives here in the nearby bungalow which has been their home since they moved from the flat above the shop. They are delighted that the business will continue as a general store and they expressed the hope that the new owners will be as happy there as they have been.

They particularly asked that it should be made known how fortunate they have been in the people who have served as their staff members over the years and without whom they simply could not have managed. They remember them with affection and gratitude. Harvington people extend their warmest thanks to John and Shirley and in wishing them many years of health and happiness in their well-earned retirement.

HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: Members enjoyed a pleasant evening last Wednesday when they, and invited guests, were entertained at the home of the society's secretary Edith Capell, using the opportunity to look at and admire, the lovely garden in which she and her friend Val Cook take such pride. Supper, with wine, was served and greatly appreciated by all.

ST JAMES' CHURCH: The Annual Fete will take place on July 14 and will be opened at 2pm by the new Rector, the Reverend Richard Thorniley, who, though not yet in residence here has taken up his new duties and is looking forward to getting to know his new parishioners. One of his first commitments is to the school which he plans to visit on alternate Wednesday mornings to take the assembly. Readers are asked to be aware that the Sunday morning service (Holy Communion except on the first Sunday of the month) is now timed to begin at 9.15am and not 9.30am as before.
