STOURPORT High School pupil James Shore is the only county boy to qualify for a major national competition.

The English Schools Athletic Association Combined Events Championships will be held at Hull in September.

In the regional round at Abington, Shore was fourth in the senior boys competition.

The teenager achieved personal bests in seven of his 10 events and gained points in his first attempt at pole vault.

Senior girls Hayley Reid, of Haybridge High, and Charlotte Mensah, of Stourport, helped the county team into third overall.

Reid has improved at every county outing in recent years and managed a season's best in hurdles, high jump, shot, javelin and 800 metres to finish eighth.

Mensah completed seven events, despite a hamstring injury, and was ninth with bests in high jump, javelin and 800m.

Graeme Pardoe, of Stourport, was placed 15th individually and helped the county inter-boys team to fifth place.

Pardoe achieved personal bests in 100m hurdles, javelin, 400m, high jump, discus and shot putt.

Sarah Hough, of Stourport, and Stephani Parretti, of Haybridge, were part of the team that finished seventh.

Hough was 23rd in her second ever heptathlon, achieving personal bests in high jump, shot and javelin. Parretti finished 22nd with improved scores in high jump, 22m, 800m and javelin.

The county junior boys team was made up of Stourport High School athletes.

They came fourth behind Buckinghamshire, Derbyshire and Warwickshire. John Cole finished 14th, Sam Strange 15th and Rob Phillips 16th.

Cole and Phillips produced personal bests in four of their five events and Strange did likewise in shot, high jump and 800m.
