PLANS to build a Lidl superstore in Malvern Link look set to be refused next week.

The scheme, for the former garage site in Worcester Road, has aroused bitter opposition from local residents.

An 800-signature petition was handed to Malvern Hills District Council from opponents. And the council has also received 75 individual letters of objection.

Residents fear the store, if allowed, would generate serious traffic problems in the lower end of the Link and force drivers to take short-cuts through residential streets.

Malvern Town Council has also raised strong objections to the plan, saying it was particularly concerned by the effect on emergency services, which frequently pass along Worcester Road.

The district council's southern area planning committee will consider the plan at its meeting on Monday night (June 4).

Members are being recommended by planning officers to turn down Lidl's plan.

The officers say it would be "seriously harmful" to the Link conservation area, the building would dominate nearby houses and would affect highway safety. It would also result in the loss of two mature trees.

Conservation area consent to demolish the existing buildings on the site, which used to be occupied by eurohaus and before that South Herefordshire Garage, is also recommended for refusal. A separate application for conservation area consent to demolish a front extension to part of the site is recommended for approval.
