EVESHAM and Pershore Housing Association's chief executive has suggested staff run the tourist information centre subject to the board of management agreeing the share of the new town hall.

During a recent meeting with councillors Richard Hampton, Ken Chambers and representatives of EPHA, it emerged that Ian Hughes would be prepared to let his staff run the tourist information centre from the former post office building in High Street.

Coun Chambers said someone from the Heart of England tourist board would be able to provide training for EPHA staff- this was agreed by Mr Hughes, who said at the meeting it would provide additional employment for his workers.

The chairman added that the tourist information centre at Droitwich used two paid part-timers during the week and had volunteers working at weekends.

He also said he did not know of any small towns who run tourist information centres seven days a week.

Coun Ray Steadman said he was concerned how much storage space EPHA would need. However, it was revealed that minimal space would be adequate.

The chairman said that sharing the building would be a 'heaven sent solution', providing that EPHA go through with it.

Further concern was expressed when it was revealed the hall space in the new building would be approximately 15% less than what councillors have in St Agatha's Hall in Head Street, even though the architect had told them there would be enough space to accommodate 100 people.

The chairman said it was important that a decision should be taken to carry on with the scheme or start again.

Coun Steadman proposed a motion that the scheme should proceed without further delay and without further expense.

He added that it was important the architect aimed to include the same hall space (85 square metres) of St Agatha's Hall.

This motion was seconded by Coun Hampton and carried.
