GARDENING SOCIETY: The May meeting was well attended.

The monthly competition of a jam jar of herbs was won by Mrs Pam Smith, second Mrs Webb, third Mrs Hale and fourth Mrs Kitson.

The Loft Workshop was introduced by the co-ordinator who showed examples of their work and bird and bat boxes were offered for sale.

The Loft Workshop is based in Stratford and is managed by the CVS and Volunteer Bureaux.

Linda Farrar then gave a very informative talk on Ancient Roman Gardens.

She decided to combine two of her interests, history and gardens and has been studying Ancient Roman gardens since her university years.

All her holidays are taken going back to places where she can see evidence of these gardens.

She has written a book all about ancient Roman gardens.

She illustrated her talk and we saw from where many of the present garden designers get their ideas.

The next meeting, in the Crawford Hall, 7.30pm for 8pm, will be on June 21 when Richard Hancock will talk on China - The Tibetan Borderlands.

The monthly competition will be 'three stages of a rose'.
