A BUDGET of £70,000 could be allocated for improvements at a troubled housing complex.

Spa Housing Association representatives met with Charland Cry campaigners last Wednesday to discuss safety issues at Charland Court, off Shepherds Way.

The association and tenants agreed to join forces to crack down on arsonists who attempted to wreck the Westlands flats.

Three weeks ago, firefighters attended several serious fires within days and some residents were made homeless due to smoke damage.

Tenants, led by their neighbour, Louise Jefferies, raised concerns about safety and residents called for smoke detectors, changes to bin stores -- where the blazes broke out and improved security doors.

At the meeting, 22-year-old Miss Jefferies was told a budget of £50,000 to £70,000 could be available for improvements and residents will be asked to assist with plans.

The mum-of-one was also informed smoke detectors would be fitted and security doors would be fixed in the coming month.

Miss Jefferies told the Advertiser: "I'm pleased the housing association has listened to our concerns, I did not expect this kind of response."

Association property manager, Albert Higgins, said: "Lots of good ideas - raised by us and tenants - were discussed.

"The housing association can design technical improvements but we want residents to lets us know the practicalities of these options."

A public meeting to discuss issues at Charland Court begins at 7.30pm, next Wednesday, June 6, in Westlands Community Hall, off Farmer's Way.
