THREE Worcestershire companies with a below-average accident rate have won a prestigious award from the British Safety Council.

Representatives of Pershore based Schloetter Company Ltd, Southco Manufacturing Company Inc of Worcester and Thomas Vale Construction of Stourport joined 1,000 guests for the National Safety Awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.

The winning companies faced a gruelling test to satisfy the awards panel. All had to have lower than average accident rates, sound safety policies and plans and a board-level commitment to health and safety.

They also had to detail their health and safety officers' qualifications, provide details of two significant health and safety advances for the year and provide notification of any impending health and safety legal action.

"The National Safety Awards highlight organisations that reach the top levels of health and safety," said Sir Neville Purvis, KCB, director general of the British Safety Council.

"They are a mark of a proven and significant achievement in safety standards."

Tony Blair also sent the winners a message of congratulations.

"Your efforts and commitment have made a real contribution to the health of your business and the health of your workforce," his message read.

"I send award winners and the British Safety Council my very best wishes and encouragement to build on your success."
