IN reply to Mr Tarplett's letter, I too abhor dog mess, just as much as Mr Tarplett, though I do own two dogs. I clean up after them, as I am sure my neighbours will testify.

These days I rarely go on the hills because the problem seems to be getting worse. Surely the answer is for local authorities, not just on the hills but all around, to institute the necessary by-laws imposing a hefty fine on those irresponsible dog owners who are too 'namby-pamby' to clear up after their dogs.

Barring dogs from the hills merely directs the problem elsewhere, as the closure of footpaths has clearly illustrated. If other authorities can impose the necessary rules of behaviour, why not here?

Part of the pleasure of walking on the hills is to exercise ones dogs. But I do agree people must be more responsible and think of others following behind.

The introduction of suitable bins might encourage better behaviour.
