MOTORCYCLISTS in the two counties are being offered the chance to become advanced riders by the local branch of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Based in Kidderminster, the motorcycle division of the institute is particularly keen to attract younger riders to the scheme, which is aimed at improving rider safety.

"Most people agree that if only all car drivers drove to an advanced standard, the majority of car accidents could well be avoided," said spokesman John Heidt.

"But not so many realise that there is also an advanced standard for motor cyclists which is perhaps even more important since the biker is far more vulnerable than the car driver."

Mr Heidt said during 1999 and 2000, more than 400 motorcyclists were killed or seriously injured in the West Mercia police area.

He said "contrary to popular belief", most motor cycle accidents in open areas did not involve any other vehicles.

"Riders appear more likely to be involved in a serious accident when riding as part of a fast moving group," said Mr Heidt.

"Most motorcycle accidents on the open road are caused by driver error, usually when going too fast to be able to cope with the unexpected."

The Skill for Life package, which costs £75, includes the local group fee, an IAM manual, use of the group facilities, the test fee and a one-year IAM subscription.

Training rides are held every weekend, overseen by the group's 11 qualified trainers.
