A MAN assaulted his partner after downing alcohol and mixing his medication.

Droitwich magistrates were told how Ian Kiely and his partner Anne Taylor had been drinking in Malvern's Bluebell pub on Thursday, April 19.

At lunchtime Mrs Taylor left and took her daughter to a hair appointment, but the couple met up in another pub later on that day.

"They were both drinking heavily," said Susan Cliff, prosecuting. "Mr Kiely was even a problem in the pub.

"The pair left in a taxi for home. But an altercation took place between them. Both of their memories were very hazy afterwards because they'd been drinking so much.

"Mr Kiely started shouting aggressively towards Mrs Taylor and she thinks he threatened her and at some point he physically hurt her.

"He took hold of her left shoulder and hit the left side of her face. She went to see a clergyman and the reverend call the police."

Mrs Cliff said Kiely was arrested and interviewed, when he admitted the assault.

The 33-year-old, of Ballhurst, Bromyard, admitted assault by beating and a charge of failing to surrender to bail.

Dale Sheehan, defending, said Kiely accepted what happened but could not recall most of it.

"Both parties had been drinking heavily. Mr Kiely was also taking a high dosage of diazepam at the time. He suffers from anxiety and depression," he said.

"He's still with his partner and she supports him today. He's been going to church to deal with his anger and aggression."

Kiely was fined £50 for assault and £30 for the bail act offence. He was also ordered to pay £55 court costs.
