VACUUM cleaners and a floor polisher blew a 600-strong audience away at a concert staged at Malvern Theatres.

The unusual ensemble had it in the bag when they starred in the musical extravaganza at Malvern's Forum Theatre to celebrate Worcestershire's young musical talent.

Five orchestras, two brass bands and the Worcestershire Youth Choir made a clean sweep at the concert, made up of a cast of 350 musicians, aged 11 to 19.

"It was an absolutely fantastic concert. All the kids played brilliantly" said organiser Audrey Holttum.

"It was a sell-out and everyone seemed to really love it."

The vacuum cleaners and floor polisher were part of Sir Malcolm Arnold's Grand Overture, written in the 1950s for popular cartoonist Gerard Hoffnung's concerts.

At one point, the conductor has to shoot the machines to silence them.

"Everyone laughed when the conductor shot them to shut them up and we had male staff members dressed up as female cleaners, which was fun," said Mrs Holttum.
