FOUR members of Worc-ester Rugby Club's ladies' first team were involved in England's semi-final defeat in the European Champion-ships.

Number eight Jaine Lock, flanker Alex Pilkington, hooker Nicola Goodwin and centre Karen Andrew were part of the 24-strong England Select side that travelled to Lille in Northern France.

However, only Andrew made a scoring impression during the 15-8 defeat to Spain. The centre kicked a penalty while the only other score came from an unconverted Lou Latter try.

England had begun the championships well on Monday when they saw off the challenge of Kazakhstan with a 29-15 win. Latter bagged a brace of tries while Lock, Wench and Vicky McCormack also scored tries.

Meanwhile, Worcester are urging local primary and middle schools to get in touch if they are keen to expand their commitment to rugby.

The Sixways club already run a successful community programme introducing rugby to schools.

However, they are keen to expand their involvement with further schools, in particular those that have not previously taught rugby to pupils.

"We have equipment and teaching materials available to help teachers introduce boys and girls to rugby," said Academy Director Carl Douglas.

"We are asking teachers and governors to get in touch and we'll be pleased to offer advice and assistance," he said.

Underlining their commitment to youth rugby, Worcester's under sevens continued their winning run.

Following their victory at Stratford, they took the under-sevens event by storm at Moseley, scoring 26 tries and conceding only seven.

The team beat Bristol St. Marys 5-2, Newcastle 5-0, and Woodrush 8-2 to comfortably win their group and proceed to the Semi Finals where they beat rivals Droitwich 3-1 in a closely fought game.

In the final they met Bristol St. Marys and Worcester quickly established an early lead before going on to claim a 5-2 win.

The squad have now notched up 50 tries and conceded only nine in an 11 game unbeaten run.
