EXETER City last Saturday and now table-topping Chesterfield tonight.

There's no doubt that our matches in the Nationwide League Division Three are coming thick and fast.

But there is still one important ingredient we are lacking --consistency!

In terms of being difficult to beat I have to say our consistency is pretty good and I've no complaints with that.

It's just that we need to a get to a consistency level where -- without being disrespectful to the Exeters and Carlisles of this world -- we need to beat them when they come here.

But we just haven't got to that level yet. All the teams above us in the table, whether it's Leyton Orient or Cheltenham, win those kind of games and that's exactly what we've got to do.

That's not a criticism of my players. We always felt it was going to take time, but what's holding us back at the moment is getting to that level of performance every week that will be good enough to win us those type of matches.

Having said that when we play we can hold our own with the best, we've proved that already.

We haven't lost to any of the teams above us in the table and that's a credit to our boys.

But there have been other matches where we needed to have raised the tempo.

In fairness, I thought the first 20 minutes on Saturday was excellent. Sitting so close to their bench we could hear their shouting and screaming.

They had to change the system twice to try to contain us and what they did in the end was to man-mark Andy Ducros. It was then that he found difficulty in getting into the game.

But really that's two-fold. When you are man-marked you get a split second where you are on your own and that's when you need the ball. Unfortunately we weren't quick enough to get it to him.

One other high point about Saturday was that our latest recruit John Durnin did a lot of good work, but for my liking he did it too far away from the goal.

As the game went on we became more and more frustrated and he dropped back deeper and deeper.

It's not what we want, but it wasn't his fault, he was waiting for chances.

He had one opportunity in the first half with a curler which nearly went into the top corner, but that was it really. I must say, though, that I'm pleased with his contribution so far.

I had a feeling on Saturday that it might not totally be our day. We looked at the players before the game and you could sense that the spark in their eyes wasn't quite there.

They hadn't fully recovered from the previous Tuesday's match at Darlington which was very tough for us.

I suppose that's another problem really -- we take too long to recover from matches. But I think that's a bit down to us going full-time.

It's taken its toll on some of the players, but they looked bright enough during training yesterday and are raring to have a crack at Chesterfield tonight.

And what a night it should be. We keep saying that night games here at Aggborough are a bit special and I'm expecting that to be the case this evening.

They will bring a big following because they are top of the table so I'm sure there's going to be quite an atmosphere.

We're hoping we can inject a bit more tempo into our game than we did on Saturday and if we do who knows what might happen!
