STAR batsman Graeme Hick has run up a Worcestershire record £345,406 for his 1999 benefit.

The bumper figure was re-vealed by the New Road club today.

The previous highest Worcestershire benefit total was £271,275 for left-arm spinner Richard Illingworth in 1997.

Thirty-three-year-old Hick said: "I am obviously very delighted with how successful my benefit has been.

"I would like to thank Cecil Duckworth, chairman of the benefit committee, and all my committees who worked unstintingly throughout the year as well as all those people who have helped or contributed.

"My wife Jackie and I are most appreciative of everyone's support and generosity.

New Road secretary Mike Vockins said: "It is a super result, and one which is well deserved.

"It certainly reflects Graeme's immense popularity throughout the cricket world.

"It also shows the real appreciation by so many cricket supporters of all the Graeme has achieved.

"It has become the tradition that we announce the benefit result at our annual general meeting in early February but as Graeme and Cecil were both away at that time the announcement rightly was delayed until their return.

"Clearly it is a result well worth waiting for and one which will please Graeme's many fans.

Hick, one of 12 players recently awarded central contracts by the England and Wales Cricket Board, will captain Worcestershire next season when he is not required for international duty.

Steve Rhodes will deputise for him when he is away.

Since making his debut for Worcestershire in 1984, Hick has become a firm favourite with County followers who have watched him blossom into one of the club's all-time greats.

His record-busting exploits with the bat have been a major part of Worcestershire's string successes in recent years.
