WORCESTERSHIRE have signed Australian Test paceman Andy Bichel as their overseas replacement for Glenn McGrath next season.

The 30-year-old has been snapped up on the recommendation of McGrath and former County captain Tom Moody.

Right-arm fast medium bowler Bichel has won three Test caps for Australia and played in 17 one-day internationals.

The talented Queenslander has made 57 appearances for his State, taking 239 wickets including 6-47 in last season's Pura Milk Cup final -- formerly the Sheffield Shield.

Worcestershire chairman John Elliott said today: "It's tremendous news that Andy has agreed to join us, especially as at least two other counties were interested in signing him.

"We were determined to go for an experienced top player who would be available for the whole summer.

"A number of other top players approached us, but the increasing number of series which cut across the English season meant they were unlikely to be available for the whole season.

"When Glenn and Tom gave us such positive recommendations about Andy we had no doubts about going for him."

Bichel, who was Queensland's Player of the Year in the 1999-2000 season, is a good outfielder who bats usefully down the order. He has a first-class hundred and four fifties to his credit.

Bichel made his Test debut in the fourth Test against the West Indies at the Adelaide Oval in January 1997.

Elliott added: "In terms of Australian cricket Andy is something of a late developer, but in recent seasons he has made a strong impact in Australia as a swing bowler with a record of bowling tight, accurate spells over sustained periods.

"Stepping into Glenn's shoes is a challenge for any player but, given his ringing endorsement from Glenn and Tom, we're confident Andy can do this."

Worcestershire, meanwhile, expect McGrath to be back at New Road for the 2002 season. Elliott said: "Glenn's enjoyed being with us here at New Road and is keen to come back."

Worcestershire have swooped swiftly to capture Bichel and are anxious to further boost their ranks for next year. One of their targets is known to be Warwickshire batsman Anurag Singh.
