MARK Newton is to succeed Mike Vockins as chief executive at Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

The 48-year-old, currently Director of Marketing for Yorkshire CCC, will take over in June when Vockins retires after 30 years at New Road.

Newton, who was chosen from more than 100 applicants, has spent most of his business career in sport and sports administration.

Prior to his current role, he was Director of Marketing for the Rugby Football League and was involved in the establishment of the Super League.

He spent seven years as Business Director of Surrey County Cricket Club, which followed a period as General Manager of the Thames Valley Tigers Basketball Club.

He is a member of the England and Wales Cricket Board's Marketing Advisory Committee, as well as a keen club cricketer.

Worcestershire chairman John Elliott said: "We are delighted that Mark has accepted the post.

"He brings with him an immense wealth of business experience within the game, including the very valuable experience that he has gained at two Test Match grounds, at The Oval and at Headingley, which will undoubtedly stand him in good stead."

Newton said today: "I am delighted to be joining Worcestershire.

"The County is held in high regard throughout the first-class game and I look forward to playing a part in helping the club achieve continued success on and off the field.

"The experience I have gained at two Test Match grounds, and elsewhere in the sporting world, will stand me in good stead. I am really looking forward to the challenge."
