WORCESTERSHIRE batsman Elliott Wilson will miss the start of the new season because of injury.

The 24-year-old opener has undergone an operation on his back and will not be available when the County launch their Championship campaign against Middlesex at Lord's on April 20.

Wilson has been playing in Australia during the winter, but returned home early because of the problem. The original trouble was an abscess close to his spinal cord. It was then revealed that he had a cracked vertebrae which required surgery.

Worcestershire secretary Mike Vockins said today: "He's had a lot of back trouble, but he tells us that he is now feeling better than at any stage and hopes to get back in advance of the surgeon's projection."

Last season Wilson was third in the County's list of first-class run scorers with 779, including centuries against Middlesex and Nottinghamshire.
