A CUNNING thief cut the fuel pipe of a van so he could later steal its contents.
Worcester police said the blue Peugeot boxer van was packed with cigarettes and beer after its owner had been to the Booker cash and carry at Warndon.
Officers said while he had been shopping, the fuel pipe was severed.
The driver returned to the van and drove off, running out of petrol just before Plantation Drive.
He managed to pull off the road at a bus stop opposite Norman Close to call for assistance.
But while he was away from the vehicle a man drove up in a maroon, V-registered estate car and broke into the van stealing its contents.
He is described as 5ft 10in, wearing dark clothes.
"This was a well thought out crime and although similar offences have occurred in the West Midlands area, this is the first incident of this type in South Worcestershire," said PC Len Baines.
If anyone witnessed the theft or has any other information they can call Worcester police on 01905 723888.
