6 THIS Government's broken promises on the environment are tragic.

Tony Blair, as Energy Spokesman in 1989, said: "We agree that the greenhouse effect and global warming is a serious environmental problem - perhaps the most serious that we face."

The Government promises to "promote renewable energy.... with the objective of 10 per cent electricity generation from renewable sources by 2010 and 20 per cent by 2005" (New Labour, New Life for Britain, 1996). Yet the current level of renewable energy generation is less than 2 per cent.

The target which Conservatives support, of generating 10 per cent of our electricity from renewable energy, will not be met.

Only 100 buildings use solar power, compared to Germany's target of 100,000.

Proposals to build millions of houses on greenfield land and plans to build dozens of incinerators will alter and damage the countryside unnecessarily.

We have all heard the conflicting signals about GM food. There have been GM test sites in the county.

It seems that only the Conservative Party will fight for the environment. Conservatives will encourage recycling of household waste.

Conservatives will cut the tax from bio-diesel and support a host of measures designed to make the renewable energy target a success.

Conservative Prospective Candidate for Leominster.
