The boiler, including firebox, was lifted off the 7812 Erlestoke Manor locomotive at Bewdley Station.
It has been taken to the Severn Valley Railway's boiler works in Bridgnorth, where it will be transferred to sister locomotive 7802 Bradley Manor.
Severn Valley Railway marketing manager John Leach said: "This was unusual as the boiler would normally have been lifted off in Bridgnorth, but was instead done in the open at Bewdley to speed up the process."
He added that it costs about £250,000 to completely overhaul a locomotive. Bradley Manor should be refitted in about three months.
