WORCESTERSHIRE were on the receiving end of a whirlwind batting performance from Ian Blackwell when Derbyshire clinched a six-wicket win in the County Championship match at Kidderminster.

The 21-year-old left-hander blitzed the County attack for 31 minutes to score an unbeaten 62 which enabled his side to storm to a victory target of 180.

Blackwell tore into the County attack by smashing two sixes and 12 fours off 35 balls.

He put on an unbeaten 69 in seven dazzling overs with Steve Titchard after Derbyshire had slipped to 114-4.

For Worcestershire it was a disappointing defeat which was their third in a row at Kidderminster.

They have now won six, lost three and drawn four since first-class fixtures resumed their in 1987.

Before Blackwell entered the fray, however, the County had put in a spirited fight which they finally lost shortly after tea on Saturday.

Paceman Alamgir Sheriyar and Stuart Lampitt both collected a couple of wickets before Blackwell completely took over centre stage.

Sheriyar's brace took his tally for the season to an impressive 82, although it was Blackwell who provided the main talking point.

He had one stoke of luck, however, when he reached 35 and was dropped at mid-on by Philip Weston.

The County now face an uphill battle to finish in the top half of the table where they will need to be if they are to feature in the top division of the split Championship next season.

Their determination to fight to the bitter end, however, was highlighted on Saturday whey they began 111 ahead on 177-7 with Lampitt on 14 not out and Matthew Rawnsley with 13.

They continued to frustrate the visiting attack and put on 57 in 23 overs before they were eventually parted by paceman Phil DeFreitas.

He yorked Rawnsley for 20 and then followed up by trapping Sheriyar leg before.

DeFreitas, however, was denied the chance of a hat-trick by brave Paul Pollard who came out to bat despite breaking his left index finger in the first innings.

His gallant effort enabled him to put on 30 for the last wicket with determined Lampitt who was finally removed for 48, including five fours off 146 balls, by Paul Aldred who claimed 6-81.
