A POPULAR disco for Redditch teenagers has been scrapped after it was revealed youngsters were being attacked on their way home, writes Becky Procter.

The Monday night discos were held at Redditch Football Club's Valley Stadium and the under-18 event attracted up to 80 youngsters a week.

But the club's management has temporarily pulled the plug because of the problem.

Club chairman Rod Laight said: "We have stopped the disco because of the problems youngsters were having getting home safely.

"They were being accosted and, in some cases, assaulted."

The club is in talks with police to get the disco up and running again and Mr Laight said he refused to let a small minority stop them.

He said: "We are looking at various issues. We want parents to collect them and we are considering laying bus transport on. We are also looking at putting adults on the approaches to their homes to make sure they get home safely."

Mr Laight said he was determined to get the disco back.

A police spokesman said: "The police are working with the club and parents to try to get the facility back up and running. It is a great asset to the town."

Meanwhile, Mr Laight said the future of Redditch Football Club could be affected if an application for a public entertainment licence was refused.

A number of residents objected application, which will be debated by Redditch councillors today.

Mr Laight said: "If we were not given the licence, it would curtail community activities which could affect the future of the club."
