Henry Maynard, tramp, in custody, was charged with begging in Peakman Street on March 12.
Mr J Gross said a man came to his house and asked for money on Tuesday night but he could not tell if prisoner was the man.
He did not send for the police.
Sergeant Holloway stated Mr WH Jarvis (son-in-law of the last witness) complained that a man was begging from door to door and he took the prisoner into custody.
The prisoner said he was selling lavender, some of which was found upon him.
Supt Jeffrey said this was only an excuse to go to people's houses.
The prisoner, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to three days' imprisonment.
