A heroin addict who committed a string of offences was determined to go straight after the death of his brother from the same habit, Worcester Crown Court was told.

Wayne Glennon received stolen wine, burgled a house and carried out thefts to fund his drug taking.

But one brother died last year from heroin and another brother also died for reasons unconnected with the drug, said William Rickarby, defending.

The double tragedy had made 25-year-old Glennnon, of Talbot Road, Bromsgrove, determined to make a fresh start on his release from prison.

Jailing the defendant for two years, Judge John Cavell said it was no consolation to the burglary victims to know that the raider was addicted to hard drugs.

He said the night-time raid while the occupants were asleep induced fear because of knowing a stranger had invaded their territory.

Prosecutor Paul Whitfield said police found eight bottles of stolen wine at Glennon's previous home in Bromsgrove after going to evict him.

Bailed, he committed two thefts and damaged a window.

On January 26 this year around 2am he broke into the house in Wesley Walk, Bromsgrove, stealing a wallet, cheque cards, cigarettes and tobacco.

The same morning he was arrested while interfering with a car -- and the stolen tobacco was discovered on him.

He had a previous convictions for assault and criminal damage in 1996.

Mr Rickarby said he came to crime quite late in life through heroin and it had a devastating effect on his family. His frail mother had suffered considerably.

While held on remand in custody, he had been the victim of bullying by other inmates.
