ON behalf of the farming community in Worcestershire, I would like to thank the organisations and individuals who have thrown their support behind the efforts to tackle foot and mouth disease.
By staying away from the countryside, members of the public have demonstrated a clear understanding of the threat and have given a much needed show of support for the countryside and agricultural industry.
The local authorities in Worcestershire have done a fantastic job in restricting movements and closing footpaths.
Their decisive actions have helped flag up the seriousness of the disease and hopefully helped prevent the more widespread transmission of the virus.
With the number of confirmed cases increasing daily, it is clear we still have some way to go before we can say the problem is eradicated.
My gratitude for the support shown to farmers in Worcestershire is heartfelt.
A united approach is vital and I hope we can continue to rely on this level of support.
Richard Jordan,
Worcestershire National Farmers' Union county chairman.
