CAMPAIGNERS calling for a skate park in Droitwich Spa have been reminded a similar project is already under way.

Dave Spicer, who runs Droitwich Spa Adventure Playground, on King George Playing Fields, is trying to raise £13,000 to build a skate park at his youth centre. So far, £8,000 has been collected.

Dave wants residents to focus their attention on his project rather than set up rival schemes.

The playground has remnants of the original skate park, removed from the Lido Park by Tory councillors last year.

Dave's plans include a new hard surface in the outside playground, surrounded by ramps, with a space for a small basketball court.

The ramps are currently in a poor condition but Dave plans an on-going programme to improve equipment.

He told the Advertiser: " I was shocked to hear petitions had circulated in the town calling for a skate park.

"We only need £5,000 more and the children can have one here."

Currently, the playground opens five times a week but Dave says if more volunteers supported the centre it could open daily.

Wychavon District Council's Cllr Roy Seabourne (Lab, Droit.West) recently handed over a petition, organised by a Spa mum, to the authority, calling for a skate park.

He said: "Officers are currently investigating all the possible sites for a skate park.

"The most important thing is providing something for young people ."
