A DISPUTE between Headless Cross residents and a shop has reached deadlock as neither side can reach a solution, writes Becky Procter.

Highfield Road residents want to see their road made into 'residents only' after complaining about constant lorry deliveries to Morris Mica Hardware Store, on Evesham Road.

Residents have complained about being blocked in by the lorries and damage to their cars, which they have to park on the road.

But Worcestershire County Council's highways manager for Redditch, Jim Casey, said a proposal to make the road one way was refused by residents.

He said: "The road is a dead end and I proposed to open one end up, but the residents don't want that.

"I don't know what to do to ease the problem now. It might be that nothing can be done."

And Mr Casey said even if the road was made 'residents only', the shop would still be allowed to have deliveries.

Resident Sue Stanley, who has formed a campaigning committee, said: "Lorries that deliver foods will be blocking the whole road, which means residents trying to get out will be unable to do so due to the size of the road.

"Most of Morris Mica's customers and suppliers park in the turning bay which, if the proposal is put through, will be gone.

"The shop car park is not big enough to cope with all the customers and so the residents' houses will still be littered with customers' cars, lorries and vans."

Morris Mica director David Morris said he had spent a lot of money trying to alleviate the problem which he claimed had only become apparent since new residents, who had cars, moved in.

Mr Morris, who employs 14 people, said: "I have demolished a wall and created spaces for my customers to make the situation better. I have done everything I can."
